WELCOME TO HOPE

It is our mission to extend the welcome of Jesus, and we hope that is what you experience. We also think it might be helpful to share a few things about this booklet you are holding.

It contains a liturgy.

A liturgy is a handcrafted order of worship. Like an artisan, we aim to collect all the varied pieces of gathered worship, and then place them together in the most beautiful and purposeful way possible: a way that honors you as a participant who engages with God and not a mere consumer, and a way that is relevant to our cultural moment but honors the historic and global church.

It is beautiful.

Members of hope create the cover art, the leaders of hope craft the content, and our connect card is a way to initiate relationship, the most beautiful part of hope.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Psalm 113

LEADER

Praise the Lord! Yes, give praise, O servants of the Lord. Praise the name of the Lord!

ALL

Blessed be the name of the Lord, now and forever. Everywhere—from east to west— praise the name of the Lord. For the Lord is high above the nations; his glory is higher than the heavens.

LEADER

Who can be compared with the Lord our God, who is enthroned on high?

ALL

He stoops to look down on heaven and on earth. He lifts the poor from the dust and the needy from the ash heap. He sets them among princes, even the princes of his own people! He gives the childless woman a family, making her a happy mother.

LEADER

Let us praise the Lord, who exalts the lowly, dignifies the demeaned, and reverses our despair.

DOXOLOGY

Lyrics: Thomas Ken, 1674

Praise God from whom all blessings flow;

Praise him all creatures here below;

Praise him above, ye heavenly host;

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Amen.

Almighty God

To You all hearts are open

Search and know

Our thoughts and anxious fears

Wash us in

The fountain of Your mercy

Come with Your light

We cannot hide from You

Almighty God

To You all hearts are open

With gratitude

We raise our song to You

Come and feel

The praises of Your people

In grace and truth

You make us new again

Hallelujah

Hallelujah Hallelujah

Almighty God

To You all hearts are open

We long for more

Than what this world provides

No shallow spring

Will ever satisfy us

But Your river deep

Floods over everything

Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah

To you all hearts are open

Almighty God

To you all hearts are open

Almighty God

To you all hearts are open

Almighty God

To you all hearts are open

Almighty God

By The Savior's Power

CCLI Song # 7208498 -- CCLI License # 20115471

Oh the grave that I was in

Oh the crushing weight of sin

Bear beneath the crashing waves

Sinking ne'er to rise again

Jesus pulled me to the shore

And grace abounded all the more

And I was changed that very hour

Rescued by the Savior's power

(Oh) Jesus our Redeemer

Great Defender Overcomer

Christ the Victor there’s no other

Praise His name forever(more)

With my last and final breath

Passing through the door of death

I will pray just like Your Son

Not my will but Yours be done

And as I sail to heaven's shores

I will trust You all the more

And leave this life this fleeting flower

Resting in the Savior's power

(Oh) Jesus our Redeemer

Great Defender Overcomer

Christ the Victor there’s no other

Praise His name forever

(Oh) Jesus our Redeemer

Great Defender Overcomer

Christ the Victor there’s no other

Praise His name forever

Amen amen amen amen

Oh the mighty Great I Am

Rules with victory in His hands

Oh He will crush the gates of hell

And bring us with Him to dwell

And with all who’ve come before

We will praise You evermore

For death is swallowed up forever

Conquered by the Savior's power

Amen amen amen amen

(Oh) Jesus our Redeemer

Great Defender Overcomer

Christ the Victor there’s no other

Praise His name forever

(Oh) Jesus our Redeemer

Great Defender Overcomer

Christ the Victor there’s no other

Praise His name forever(more)

Amen amen amen amen

CONFESSION OF SIN

Psalm 51:1-4

ALL

Have mercy on us, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out our transgressions. Wash away all our iniquity and cleanse us from our sin. For we know our transgressions, and our sin is always before us. Against you, you only, have we sinned and done what is evil in your sight; so you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge.

SILENT CONFESSION

GRACE ASSURANCE

Based on 1 John 1:9, 2:1-2; Psalm 51:10, 12

LEADER

Purify our hearts, O God, and renew a right spirit within us. Restore to us the joy of your salvation and sustain us with a willing spirit.

ALL

We have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins. When we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and to forgive us and purify us from all unrighteousness. Amen.

HYMN

Good and Gracious King

Words and music by: Jonny Robinson, James Ferguson, Michael Farren CCLI 7073329 © 2016 CityAlight Music

I approach the throne of glory

Nothing in my hands I bring

But the promise of acceptance

From a good and gracious king

I will give to You my burden

As You give to me Your strength

Come and fill me with Your Spirit

As I sing to You this praise

You deserve the greater glory

Overcome, I lift my voice

To the king in need of nothing

Empty handed I rejoice

You deserve the greater glory

Overcome with joy I sing

By Your love I am accepted

You’re a good and gracious king

O what grace that You would see me

As Your child and as Your friend

Safe, secure in You forever

I pour out my praise again

You deserve the greater glory

Overcome, I lift my voice

To the king in need of nothing

Empty handed I rejoice

You deserve the greater glory

Overcome with joy I sing

By Your love I am accepted

You’re a good and gracious king

Holy, holy

Lord almighty

Good and gracious

Good and gracious

Holy, holy

Lord almighty

Good and gracious king

Holy, holy

Lord almighty

Good and gracious

Good and gracious

Holy, holy

Lord almighty

Good and gracious king

You deserve the greater glory

Overcome, I lift my voice

To the king in need of nothing

Empty handed I rejoice

You deserve the greater glory

Overcome with joy I sing

By Your love I am accepted

You’re a good and gracious king

SERMON

The Gospel of Luke

Slide 1

44 “Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.” 45 But they did not understand what this meant.” (Luke 9:44–45)

Slide 2

5 Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said, 6 “As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down.”

(Luke 21:5–6)

Slide 3

7 “Teacher,” they asked, “when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?” 8 He replied: “Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them. 9 When you hear of wars

and uprisings, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.” 10 Then he said to them: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 11 There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven. (Luke 21:7–11)

Slide 4

12 “But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and put you in prison, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name.

13 And so you will bear testimony to me. 14 But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves. 15 For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict. 16 You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death. 17 Everyone will hate you because of me. 18 But not a hair of your head will perish.

19 Stand firm, and you will win life. (Luke 21:12–19)

PROFESSION OF FAITH

Westminster Shorter Catechism #88

LEADER

What is going to happen immediately after the resurrection?

ALL

Immediately after the resurrection, all created beings, angels and humans, will be finally judged. No one knows the exact time this is going to happen so that everyone can anticipate, pray for, and always be ready for the coming of the Lord.

THE LORD’S SUPPER

1 Corinthians 11:23–26

The Lord Jesus, on the night when he was betrayed took bread and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body which is broken for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me."

For All The Saints

©1997 Christopher Miner Music. Words: William How. Music: Christopher Miner.

For all the saints, who from their labors rest,

To Thee by faith before the world confessed,

Thy Name, O Jesus, be forever blessed.

Alleluia, Allelu...

Thou wast their rock, their fortress and their might;

Thou, Lord, their captain in the well fought fight;

Thou, in the darkness drear, their one true Light.

Alleluia, Allelu...

O may Thy soldiers, faithful, true and bold,

Fight as the saints who nobly fought of old,

And win with them the victor’s crown of gold.

Alleluia, Allelu...

The golden evening brightens in the west;

Soon, soon to faithful warriors comes their rest;

Sweet is the calm of paradise the blessed.

Alleluia, Allelu...

But lo! There breaks a yet more glorious day;

The saints triumphant rise in bright array;

The King of glory passes on his way,

Alleluia, Allelu...

From earth's wide bounds, from ocean's farthest coast,

Through gates of pearl streams in the countless host,

Singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,

Alleluia, Alleluia!
