WELCOME TO HOPE

It is our mission to extend the welcome of Jesus, and we hope that is what you experience. We also think it might be helpful to share a few things about this booklet you are holding.

It contains a liturgy.

A liturgy is a handcrafted order of worship. Like an artisan, we aim to collect all the varied pieces of gathered worship, and then place them together in the most beautiful and purposeful way possible: a way that honors you as a participant who engages with God and not a mere consumer, and a way that is relevant to our cultural moment but honors the historic and global church.

It is beautiful.

Members of hope create the cover art, the leaders of hope craft the content, and our connect card is a way to initiate relationship, the most beautiful part of hope.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Based on Psalm 77:10-12

LEADER

To this we will appeal: the years when the Most High stretched out his right hand.

ALL

We will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, we will remember his miracles of long ago. We will consider all his works and meditate on all his mighty deeds.

DOXOLOGY

Lyrics: Thomas Ken, 1674

Praise God from whom all blessings flow;

Praise him all creatures here below;

Praise him above, ye heavenly host;

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Amen.

HYMNS

Lord, I Need You

CCLI Song # 5925687 Christy Nockels | Daniel Carson | Jesse Reeves | Kristian Stanfill | Matt Mahe

Lord I come I confess

Bowing here I find my rest

And without You I fall apart

You're the one that guides my heart

Lord I need You oh I need You

Ev'ry hour I need You

My one defense my righteousness

Oh God how I need You

Where sin runs deep Your grace is more

Where grace is found is where You are

And where You are Lord I am free

Holiness is Christ in me

Lord I need You oh I need You

Ev'ry hour I need You

My one defense my righteousness

Oh God how I need You

So teach my song to rise to You

When temptation comes my way

And when I cannot stand I'll fall on You

Jesus You're my hope and stay

Lord I need You oh I need You

Ev'ry hour I need You

My one defense my righteousness

Oh God how I need You

Lord I need You oh I need You

Ev'ry hour I need You

My one defense my righteousness

Oh God how I need You

My one defense my righteousness

Oh God how I need You

How Deep The Father’s Love

CCLI Song # 1558110 Stuart Townend

How deep the Father’s love for us

How vast beyond all measure

That He should give His only son

To make a wretch His treasure

How great the pain of searing loss

The Father turns His face away

As wounds which mar the Chosen One

Bring many sons to glory

Behold the man upon a cross

My sin upon His shoulders

Ashamed I hear my mocking voice

Call out among the scoffers

It was my sin that held Him there

Until it was accomplished

His dying breath has brought me life

I know that it is finished

I will not boast in anything

No gifts, no power, no wisdom

But I will boast in Jesus Christ

His death and resurrection

Why should I gain from His reward?

I cannot give an answer

But this I know with all my heart

His wounds have paid my ransom

But this I know with all my heart

His wounds have paid my ransom

CONFESSION OF SIN

Book of Common Prayer

ALL

Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against your holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done. Apart from your grace, there is no health in us. O Lord, have mercy upon us. Spare all those who confess their faults. Restore all those who repent, according to your promises declared to all people in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may now live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of your holy Name. Amen.

SILENT CONFESSION

GRACE ASSURANCE

Book of Common Prayer

LEADER

Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, desires not the death of sinners, but that they may turn from evil and live. He pardons and absolves all who truly repent and genuinely believe his holy Gospel. For this reason, we ask him to grant us true repentance and his Holy Spirit, that our present deeds may please him, the rest of our lives may be pure and holy, and that at the last we may come to his eternal joy, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

HYMN

The Goodness of Jesus

CCLI Song # 7121854 Fiona Aghajanian | Harrison Druery | Jaywan Maxwell | Jonny Robinson | Michael Farren | Rich Thompson

Come you weary heart now to Jesus

Come you anxious soul now and see

There is perfect love

And comfort in your tears

Rest here in His wondrous peace

Oh the goodness,

The goodness of Jesus

Satisfied He is all that I need

May it be, come what may

That I rest all my days

In the goodness of Jesus

Come find what this world cannot offer

Come and find your joy here complete

Taste the living water

Never thirst again

Rest here in His wondrous peace

Oh the goodness,

The goodness of Jesus

Satisfied He is all that I need

May it be, come what may

That I rest all my days

In the goodness of Jesus

Come and find your hope now in Jesus

He is all He said He would be

Grace is overflowing

From the Savior’s heart

Rest here in His wondrous peace

Oh the goodness,

The goodness of Jesus

Satisfied He is all that I need

May it be, come what may

That I rest all my days

In the goodness of Jesus

Oh the goodness,

The goodness of Jesus

Satisfied He is all that I need

May it be, come what may

That I rest all my days

In the goodness of Jesus

May it be, come what may

That I rest all my days

In the goodness of Jesus

SERMON

The Gospel of Luke

Slide 1

32 “Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. (Luke 21:32–33)

Slide 2

34 “Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a trap. 35 For it will come on all those who live on the face of the whole earth. 36 Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.”

Slide 3

37 Each day Jesus was teaching at the temple, and each evening he went out to spend the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives, 38 and all the people came early in the morning to hear him at the temple. (Luke 21:34–38)

Slide 4

29 He told them this parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees. 30 When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. 31 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near. (Luke 21:29–31)

Slide 5

“...that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.” (21:36)

Slide 6

“For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face (πρόσωπον πρὸς πρόσωπον; פנים אלֶ־פנים). Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known” (1 Cor 13:12).

PROFESSION OF FAITH

The Apostles' Creed

ALL

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE LORD’S SUPPER

1 Corinthians 11:23–26

The Lord Jesus, on the night when he was betrayed took bread and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body which is broken for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me."

HYMNS

Holy Forever

CCLI Song # 7201044 Brian Johnson | Chris Tomlin | Jason Ingram | Jenn Johnson | Phil Wickham

A thousand generations falling down in worship

To sing the song of ages to the Lamb

And all who've gone before us

And all who will believe

Will sing the song of ages to the Lamb

Your name is the highest

Your name is the greatest

Your name stands above them all

All thrones and dominions

All powers and positions

Your name stands above them all

And the angels cry Holy

All creation cries Holy

You are lifted high Holy

Holy forever

If you've been forgiven and if you've been redeemed

Sing the song forever to the Lamb

If you walk in freedom and if you bear His name

Sing the song forever to the Lamb

We'll sing the song forever and amen

And the angels cry Holy

All creation cries Holy

You are lifted high Holy

Holy forever

Hear Your people sing Holy

To the King of Kings Holy

You will always be Holy

Holy forever

Your name is the highest

Your name is the greatest

Your name stands above them all

All thrones and dominions

All powers and positions

Your name stands above them all

Your name is the highest

Your name is the greatest

Your name stands above them all

All thrones and dominions

All powers and positions

Your name stands above them all

And the angels cry Holy

All creation cries Holy

You are lifted high Holy Holy forever

Hear Your people sing Holy

To the King of Kings Holy

You will always be Holy

Holy forever

You will always be Holy

Holy forever

You will always be Holy

Holy forever

Is He Worthy?

CCLI #7108951 Ben Shive and Andrew Peterson

Do you feel the world is broken?

We do.

Do you feel the shadows deepen?

We do.

Do you know that all the dark won’t stop the light from getting through?

We do.

Do you wish that you could see it all made new?

We do.

Is all creation groaning?

It is.

Is a new creation coming?

It is.

Is the glory of the Lord

to be the light within our midst?

It is.

Is it good that we remind ourselves of this?

It is.

Is anyone worthy?

Is anyone whole?

Is anyone able to break the seal and open the scroll?

The Lion of Judah

Who conquered the grave

He is David’s root and the lamb who died

To ransom the slave

Is He worthy?

Is He worthy?

Of all blessing and honor and glory?

Is He worthy of this?

He is!

Does the Father truly love us?

He does.

Does the Spirit move among us?

He does.

And does Jesus, our Messiah, hold forever those He loves?

He does.

Does our God intend to dwell again with us?

He does.

Is anyone worthy?

Is anyone whole?

Is anyone able to break the seal and open the scroll?

The Lion of Judah

Who conquered the grave

He is David’s root and the lamb who died

To ransom the slave

From every people and tribe

Every nation and tongue

He has made us a kingdom and priests to God

To reign with the Son

Is He worthy?

Is He worthy?

Of all blessing and honor and glory?

Is He worthy?

Is He worthy?

Is He worthy of this?

He is!

Is He worthy? Is He worthy?

He is!

BENEDICTION

Go forth in peace and remember. Remember the faith of those who have labored in this corner of God’s Kingdom we call Hope. Remember both the joys you have shared and the sorrows you have carried for one another. Remember the grace that God has supplied this body of believers through every season. As you celebrate the stories of his work among us, may remembering be for you an exercise in true hope—anticipating the Lord’s future kindness because you have experienced his past faithfulness. And may the love that first brought Hope together continue to grow among you, to the glory of God. Amen.

We all know that the university is meant to be a place of learning. It's meant to equip people with knowledge and skill for meaningful work. But is there more to life than having a good job? And in a world where the advancement of AI brings ever more uncertainty, is mere knowledge and skill enough? What is needed to flourish as human beings in our distracted, anxious, and contentious world? What if what we’re really looking for is wisdom? Join us as we learn from Dr. Zack Eswine, author of Wiser with Jesus, as we explore together what it might mean to be a wise person in God’s world. Light refreshments will be provided, and there will be time for audience Q&A. Seating is limited, so please RSVP at the Carmen House website by November 19th.
