WELCOME TO HOPE

It is our mission to extend the welcome of Jesus, and we hope that is what you experience. We also think it might be helpful to share a few things about this booklet you are holding.

It contains a liturgy.

A liturgy is a handcrafted order of worship. Like an artisan, we aim to collect all the varied pieces of gathered worship, and then place them together in the most beautiful and purposeful way possible: a way that honors you as a participant who engages with God and not a mere consumer, and a way that is relevant to our cultural moment but honors the historic and global church.

It is beautiful.

Members of hope create the cover art, the leaders of hope craft the content, and our connect card is a way to initiate relationship, the most beautiful part of hope.

REFLECTION

Liturgy of Dioscorus

"Light of Light, and God of God, who did bow your holy heavens and descend to earth for the salvation of the world, out of your love of humanity; extend your almighty right hand, and send out your blessings on us all. . . . Guide our steps into the paths of righteousness, that we may behave ourselves according to your will and observe your commandments and do them all the days of our life, and come to a blessed end and sing a ceaseless hymn with your saints to you, and your Father and your Holy Spirit. [Amen.]”

CALL TO WORSHIP

119:1-8

LEADER

Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the LORD! Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with their whole heart, who also do no wrong, but walk in his ways! You have commanded your precepts to be kept diligently.

ALL

Oh that my ways may be steadfast in keeping your statutes! Then I shall not be put to shame, having my eyes fixed on all your commandments. I will praise you with an upright heart, when I learn your righteous rules. I will keep your statutes; do not utterly forsake me!

DOXOLOGY

Lyrics: Thomas Ken, 1674

Praise God from whom all blessings flow;

Praise him all creatures here below;

Praise him above, ye heavenly host;

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Amen.

Great Is Thy Faithfulness

CCLI Song # 18723 -- CCLI License # 20115471

Great is Thy faithfulness O God my Father

There is no shadow of turning with Thee

Thou changest not Thy compassions they fail not

As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be

Great is Thy faithfulness great is Thy faithfulness

Morning by morning new mercies I see

All I have needed Thy hand hath provided

Great is Thy faithfulness Lord unto me

Summer and winter and springtime and harvest

Sun moon and stars in their courses above

Join with all nature in manifold witness

To Thy great faithfulness mercy and love

Great is Thy faithfulness great is Thy faithfulness

Morning by morning new mercies I see

All I have needed Thy hand hath provided

Great is Thy faithfulness Lord unto me

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth

Thy own dear presence to cheer and to guide

Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow

Blessings all mine with ten thousand beside

Great is Thy faithfulness great is Thy faithfulness

Morning by morning new mercies I see

All I have needed Thy hand hath provided

Great is Thy faithfulness Lord unto me

Great is Thy faithfulness

Great is Thy faithfulness

Lord unto me

Here I Am To Worship

CCLI # 3266032 | © 2000 Thankyou Music | Tim Hughes

Light of the world

You stepped down into darkness

Opened my eyes let me see

Beauty that made

This heart adore You

Hope of a life spent with You

So here I am to worship

Here I am to bow down

Here I am to say

That You’re my God

You’re altogether lovely

Altogether worthy

Altogether wonderful to me

King of all days

Oh so highly exalted

Glorious in Heaven above

Humbly You came

To the Earth You created

All for love’s sake became poor

So here I am to worship

Here I am to bow down

Here I am to say

That You’re my God

You’re altogether lovely

Altogether worthy

Altogether wonderful to me

And I’ll never know

How much it cost

To see my sin

Upon that cross

And I’ll never know

How much it cost

To see my sin

Upon that cross

And I’ll never know

How much it cost

To see my sin

Upon that cross

And I’ll never know

How much it cost

To see my sin

Upon that cross

So here I am to worship

Here I am to bow down

Here I am to say

That You’re my God

You’re altogether lovely

Altogether worthy

Altogether wonderful to me

So here I am to worship

Here I am to bow down

Here I am to say

That You’re my God

You’re altogether lovely

Altogether worthy

Altogether wonderful to me

CONFESSION OF SIN

LEADER

Draw us into your love Christ Jesus, and deliver us from fear.

ALL

Almighty God, we confess today our worry. Instead of resting in your sovereignty, we can fear the unknown. Instead of bringing our requests before you in prayer, we fret and fight for control. Forgive us, O Lord. Help us to seek first your kingdom and your righteousness. Set us free from our anxiety. Give us contentment and peace, for you have assured us that if we seek your kingdom, we will not lack any good thing. Amen.

GRACE ASSURANCE

Romans 8:1-4

LEADER

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

HYMN

How Deep The Father’s Love CCLI Song # 1558110 Stuart Townend

How deep the Father’s love for us

How vast beyond all measure

That He should give His only son

To make a wretch His treasure

How great the pain of searing loss

The Father turns His face away

As wounds which mar the Chosen One

Bring many sons to glory

Behold the man upon a cross

My sin upon His shoulders

Ashamed I hear my mocking voice

Call out among the scoffers

It was my sin that held Him there

Until it was accomplished

His dying breath has brought me life

I know that it is finished

I will not boast in anything

No gifts, no power, no wisdom

But I will boast in Jesus Christ

His death and resurrection

Why should I gain from His reward?

I cannot give an answer

But this I know with all my heart

His wounds have paid my ransom

But this I know with all my heart

His wounds have paid my ransom

A Life of Invitation: Rethinking Obedience

A Life of Invitation: Invitation as a way of life.

Slide 1

“Even a cursory study of the world’s religions will show how obsessed humans are with finding some way to (a) gain the favor of the gods... and/or (b) avert their wrath...” (Alan Jacobs)

Slide 2

5 See, I have taught you decrees and laws as the LORD my God commanded me, so that you may follow them in the land you are entering to take possession of it. 6 Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understanding to the nations, who will hear about all these decrees and say, “Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.” 7 What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the LORD our God is near us whenever we pray to him? 8 And what other nation is so great as to have such righteous decrees and laws as this body of laws I am setting before you today? (Deuteronomy 4:5–8)

Slide 3

Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.” (1 Peter 3:15–16)

PROFESSION OF FAITH

Heidelberg Catechism #114

LEADER

But can those converted to God keep the commandments perfectly?

ALL

No. In this life even the holiest have only a small beginning of this obedience. Nevertheless, with earnest purpose they do begin to live not only according to some but to all the commandments of God.

THE LORD’S SUPPER

1 Corinthians 11:23–26

The Lord Jesus, on the night when he was betrayed took bread and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body which is broken for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me."

Worthy of every song we could ever sing

Worthy of all the praise we could ever bring

Worthy of every breath we could ever breathe

We live for You

Jesus, the name above every other name

Jesus, the only one who could ever save

Worthy of every breath

We live for You

Oh, we live for You

Holy, there is no one like You

There is none besides You

Open up my eyes in wonder

And show me who You are

And fill me with Your heart

And lead me in Your love

To those around me

Worthy of every song we could ever sing

Worthy of all the praise we could ever bring

Worthy of every breath we could ever breathe

We live for You

There is none besides You

Open up my eyes in wonder

And show me who You are

O Praise the Name (Anastasis)

CCLI Song # 7037787 -- CCLI License # 20115471

I cast my mind to Calvary

Where Jesus bled and died for me

I see His wounds His hands His feet

My Saviour on that cursed tree

His body bound and drenched in tears

They laid Him down in Joseph's tomb

The entrance sealed by heavy stone

Messiah still and all alone

O praise the Name of the Lord our God

O praise His Name forevermore

For endless days we will sing Your praise

Oh Lord oh Lord our God

Then on the third at break of dawn

The Son of heaven rose again

O trampled death where is your sting

The angels roar for Christ the King

O praise the Name of the Lord our God

O praise His Name forevermore

For endless days we will sing Your praise

Oh Lord oh Lord our God

He shall return in robes of white

The blazing sun shall pierce the night

And I will rise among the saints

My gaze transfixed on Jesus' face

O praise the Name of the Lord our God

O praise His Name forevermore

For endless days we will sing Your praise

Oh Lord oh Lord our God

Oh Lord oh Lord our God

Oh Lord oh Lord our God
